Year 3 & 4 Tag Rugby

Thursday 15th March 2012

Venue
Southend Rugby Football Club

Type of Competition
Tag Rugby

Summary
ARRIVAL 12.30 A.M. START 12:45 A.M. ESTIMATED FINISH 3:00 P.M

All teams are invited to bring an A and B team to the event. THIS COMPETITION IS 8-A-SIDE, IN LINE WITH NATIONAL RULES. 12 players in a squad, including a minimum of 4 girls. 3 girls must be on the pitch at all times.

Method of scoring: A try is worth one point. To score, a player must carry the ball over the opponents' goal line and press the ball into the ground. Plays are restarted in the centre circle with a tap or pass.

Passing: No forward passing is allowed only backwards and will be penalised by a free pass being awarded to the non-offending team where the ball left the players hands.

The Tackle: Only the player with the ball can be tagged and a tag is simply the removal by a defender of one of the two ribbons from the ball carrier. No spinning, fending off or guarding their ribbons is allowed in anyway, this includes using the ball to fend off players.
The defender holds the ribbon above their head and shouts ''TAG'' for all to hear. Defenders must back off 1 metre to allow the attacking player to pass; they are not allowed to snatch the ball from the player's hand.
Once tagged, players must try and stop with the ball and pass to team mate within 3 seconds of being tagged. Players are allowed to take a maximum of 2 strides when tagged.
When the attacking team starts the game again, the opposition must be back 7 metres. A total of 5 tags results in play being stopped and possession being awarded to the opposite team.

Knock on: If a player attempts to catch the ball but fumbles it and knocks it forward to the ground in the direction of the opponents goal line but no advantage for the opposition, then the whistle will be blown and possession given to the opposite team. Play will resume when the defending team are back 7 metres from the ball.

Offside: Offside only occurs immediately after a tag has been made and only those defenders, who interfere with the game, will be penalised.

Ball out of Play: If the ball or player goes out of play, a free pass is given to the opposition from the sideline.

The Free Pass: A free pass is used to start the game (from the centre of the pitch), to restart it at the place where the ball went out of play or an infringement took place. N.B. If an infringement takes place over the try line, or within 5 metres of the try line, then a free pass will be given to the opposition, 5 metres out from the try line to create some space. If and when the Tag Rugby rules are broken, a free pass is awarded to the opposition with the number of tags beginning at zero. At a free pass the ball is held with 2 hands and on the instruction ‘play’ given by the referee, the player passes the ball to a team mate. N.B. It is the referee who indicates when a free pass is taken by saying ‘play’. Players cannot take a quick free pass in Tag Rugby, instead referees must allow sufficient time for defenders to get back before play continues. The player taking the free pass must start play with a pass, they are not permitted to run with it themselves. The opposition cannot start moving forward until the player has actually passed the ball. At a free pass the opposition must be 7 metres (7 large steps) back.

Other Information
• Always 2 hands on the ball when moving and passing the ball.
• Tag Belts must be worn over the shirt at all times. Shirts must be tucked in.
• No contact – strictly no contact or grabbing a player’s clothing.
• No kicking – no kicking of the ball is permitted in Tag Rugby.
• No hand-offs – no hand-offs on the body or face permitted, or to swipe a defender’s hand away to stop them taking your ribbons. This includes using the ball to fend off defenders.
• No diving – for safety, players are not permitted to dive on a loose ball but instead must remain on their feet to play it.
• No spinning – ball carriers are not permitted to deliberately spin around to avoid being tagged.
• No barging – for safety, the ball carrier and the defender should attempt to avoid contact with each other at all times.
• No diving to score a try – For safety, players are not permitted to dive in the act of scoring a try.
