Futures Community College
In September 2007 Futures Community College, located on Southchurch Boulevard, in Southend on Sea, Essex, became one of the first Trust schools in the UK. The 2009 exam results were the best in the history of the college, with 45% of students achieving A* to C GCSE exam results. 88% of students achieved an A* to C grade in combined science, and 98% of Year 11 students achieved A* to G grades.
Developments at Futures
We are currently the subject of a massive multi million pound refurbishment and building programme that will see part of the old classrooms demolished and construction of an impressive two storey upper college building linked to the refurbished building. The project, which will be completed in September 2010 includes construction work to create a new indoor sports hall, sports pitches, recreational space, workshops, teaching space and car and cycle parking. The new college building will incorporate the opportunity to teach vocational courses, such as brick laying, plumbing and hairdressing, alongside academic subjects.
Physical Education in our school
With regards Physical Education, we have 25 hours of curriculum PE every week and a 'Must Do' policy whereby all students must take part in PE unless they are medically unable to participate. We have a strong PE department who take pride in our jobs and who are also willing to be involved in becoming a healthier school by running morning, lunchtime and afternoon clubs. Some of these clubs include: gym inductions, badminton, netball, trampolining, etc. We have recently built two extra outdoor basketball courts for students to use whenever they wish. Additionally, we have introduced new trampolines which are used to teach lessons and clubs. The school is currently visited by the Priory school once a week, where pupils can use the trampolines and are taught by an experienced member of staff.
The PE department with the support of Southend East School Sports Partnership has recently introduced some non-conventional sports within the curriculum such as martial arts fitness sessions. The students at Futures have really enjoyed the martial arts option that the SSCo has brought into the school. It has raised the amount of attendance and participation of students this year. It has been difficult to accommodate so many pupils at one time during our PE lessons and it is great to have that extra person willing to help us out and give the pupils another alternative option to exercise and healthy living.
Our recent sporting successes include the schools Year 9 boys basketball team making it through to the semi-finals of the Southend Borough Cup. Sadly they lost by just 4 points to Westcliff High School for boys. Basketball is one of the key sports within our school. We aim to run a basketball festival once a year where we invite primary schools to a fun afternoon of playing basketball.
Looking to the future we are potentially set to be involved in cheerleading, ballroom dancing and "body blitz" fitness circuits, and many other new sports programmes. We are also looking to have new 3 x 5 aside third generation football pitches built ready for next year. This will increase the participation and involvement of sport for pupils at Futures Community College and the general public.
