The school was founded in 1895 and provided the first secondary education within the Borough of Southend-on-Sea. It moved to its present spacious site on Prittlewell Chase in 1939.

At SHSB there is a vast selection of activities; athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cross- country, golf, hockey, orienteering, skiing, swimming, table-tennis, tennis and weight-training.
Each year more than 20 of SHSB students win County honours across a broad spectrum of Games. In recent years we have won national titles in a thletics and cross-country, whilst reaching finals in tennis and football. County titles have been achieved in athletics, football, cross-country and tennis. SHSB is extremely proud of its sporting record and achievements.
Adam Hickey is an international athlete and cross-country runner, Sam Sutcliffe an international rugby player. Jonty Clarke is in the current GB hockey team and Simon Thomas and Neil Scriviner became
Borough, County and National and International successes have been achieved in 4 of these sports, Athletics, Tennis, Cross-Country and Football. The highest accolade for SHSB in PE & Sport was the selection for the International World Schools Athletics and Cross-Country Championships in 2004 and 2005.
As many pupils as possible are involved in competitive matches - 100% in House matches , taking advantage of the good facilities on offer. In addition to regular fixtures against other schools, which involve as many pupils as possible - B team games in many sports, NO PUPIL is prevented from partaking in a sport on grounds of a lack of ability. `Sport for All` Enrichment for all`.
