On a sunny Thursday 8th July, primary schools from all over the Southend borough gathered on Hamstel School Field for the annual rounders tournament. A team of 9 from year groups 5 and 6 took part from the following schools: Earls Hall, Thorpe Hall, Temple Sutton, Heycroft, Friars, Bournes Green, Hamstel, Thorpe Greenways, Hinguar, Blenheim, Prince Avenue and Thorpe Hall.
The schools were split into different pools with each school playing every team in their group. Each innings consisted of 20 balls and the children played very well with lots of rounder’s being scored from some strong batting and some great catches from the fielders.
The morning consisted of the girl’s tournament, the top four teams from each pool went through to the semi finals. These schools were Bournes Green, Fairways, Earls Hall and Prince Avenue. Earls Hall and Fairways made it to the final and after a very tense game with some great batting and fielding, Earls Hall won by half a rounder. The end results were as follows:
1st Earls Hall
2nd Fairways
3rd Bournes Green
4th Prince Avenue
The afternoon was filled with the boy’s tournament. The top four teams that made it to the semi finals were Bournes Green, Heycroft, Hinguar and Earls Hall. The final ended with Bournes Green and Heycroft. Heycroft had a strong first innings of batting from Heycroft, Bournes Green stepped up to bat. After a nail biting game, Bournes Green won by half a rounder with only 2 balls remaining.
1st Bournes Green
2nd Heycroft
3rd Earls Hall
4th Hinguar
Medals were presented to the top four teams in the boys and girls events with the winners each taking a shield back to their respective schools. A massive well done to all the children who all played fantastic and also showed some great sportsmanship at such a young age. Also, a very big thank you to Hamstel School for letting us takes over their school field for the day. Thanks to all the teachers for bringing the children, the supporters who came to watch and the helpers from Southend High School for Girls.
The day ended with a rounders match between the Southend School Sports Partnership Staff and the Southend High helpers, much to our delight, the staff were victorious. Maybe a rematch next year girls?
