Double club is an exciting way to engage students to learn through sport. Double club has been created in conjunction with Southend United Football Club for Shoeburyness High School students based on the Arsenal project.
16 students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are selected to take part in the programme and they have one day per week for the whole academic year in the double club where they are taught numeracy and literacy through football in the morning and are taught football in the afternoon.
The double club uses its own exclusive classroom with interactive computers.
The room has been decorated in SUFC colours and has direct access to the football pitches.
Along with the motivating staff provided from Shoeburyness High School and Southend United the children have a comfortable, inspiring learning enviroment.
Kirsty England, double club teacher comments "The first year of the double club has been a huge success. On the whole, attendance has improved greatly. Pupils are a lot more focused in lessons and they are generally involved in less incidents than previously. There has been lots of positive feedback from subject teachers regarding double club pupils progress.
The pupils have grown in confidence and self esteem. They proudly talk about their progress and even set their own targets to work towards. The programme has had a big impact on influencing many young peoples education."
